1960 ~ 2011
MONTEREY - Kathleen O'Brien passed Friday, November 18, 2011 at 7:05 p.m. at the Cypress Ridge Care Center after a year and one-half struggle with cancer. She had just celebrated her 51st birthday.
Katie was a life-long resident of Monterey and Aptos who touched the hearts of many people through the years. She leaves a legacy of admirers who often referred to her as K.O.
A creative soul, with a passion for pop culture, Katie graduated from Monterey High and San Jose State with a degree in film. She enjoyed music and media and is well known to many as an 'early adopter' of alternative artistic expressions. Her tastes included all things creative and surrounded herself with classics such as post-impressionists and various religious and cultural art.
She is survived by a family of friends and relatives. Katie leaves her sister, Patt O'Brien, and brothers, Dan O'Brien and Mike O'Brien. She also leaves a beloved network of friends, many of whom were life-long relationships and in every sense of the word, her family. When she made friends, they were meaningful and supportive. In her final year, Katie cherished both her immediate family and her life-long friends for their support and aid. Katie was preceded in death by Patrick and Bonnie O'Brien.
Also known as Kate O'Brien, she touched many new couples as the officiant of their nuptials on the Monterey Peninsula.
Katie also loved to walk her dog Pepper on the recreation trail in Pacific Grove. Katie will be deeply missed and will be remembered for her smile, her characteristic laugh, her sometimes bold sense of humor, her creativity, and her love for Life.
